Cassie Doyle, Board Director

Cassie Doyle is CEO of the Canadian International Resources and Development Institute (CIRDI), a centre of expertise working with developing countries to improve how they develop, manage, and benefit from their natural resources. Before joining CIRDI, Ms. Doyle had a distinguished public service career with a focus over the last 20 years on innovation, the environment, and natural resource development. She has served at the executive level of all three levels of government, including as deputy minister with the Government of Canada and the Province of British Columbia. She has a deep understanding of governance and has worked collaboratively with industry, First Nations, academia, and environmental stakeholders. From 2011 to 2015, Ms. Doyle represented Canada as consul general in San Francisco. She served as Canada’s deputy minister of natural resources from 2006 to 2010 and was associate deputy minister of Environment Canada from 2003 to 2006.

Brian Fleck, Board Director

Dr. Brian Fleck has been a professor at the University of Alberta since 2000, where he has also held the positions of Associate Chair, Provost Fellow, and Chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering for five years. During his time as department chair, he led a strategic 50% growth in the number of both professors and undergraduate students and incorporated safety and risk management into the curriculum.

Gordon Lambert, Board Director

Gordon Lambert is President and CEO of GRL Collaboration for Sustainability Inc., and is the Suncor Sustainability Executive in Residence at the Ivey School of Business. Prior to establishing his own consultancy, Mr. Lambert had a distinguished career in sustainability, having served as Suncor’s Vice President, Sustainable Development for 17 years. In 2013, he was appointed Executive Advisor of Sustainability and Innovation, where he supported Suncor’s CEO, senior executive team, and Board of Directors. Before joining Suncor, Mr. Lambert worked for two years with TransAlta and 15 years with Imperial Oil. With 36 years’ experience in the energy sector, Mr. Lambert has a deep understanding of energy, the environment, and innovation, having been an advisor and frequent speaker on the topics.

Monica Norminton, Board Director

Monica Norminton is the chief financial officer and general counsel for a private family trust, where she is the legal and financial advisor and manager. She is also currently a board member for Alberta Millwrights Local 1460 Pension Trust and Health & Welfare Trust, Waste ReSolutions, and the Audit Committee for the Department of Natural Resources Canada.

Shelia O'Brien, Board Director

Sheila O’Brien is a business advisor and corporate director, with 35 years of experience in the oil, gas, pipeline, and petrochemical sectors in Canada, the United States, and Europe, having worked for NOVA Corporation, Petro-Canada, Pan-Arctic Oil, and Amoco. Most recently, she spent 13 years as a member of the executive leadership team at NOVA Chemicals, where, in her capacity as senior vice president, she had responsibility for human resources, investor relations, public relations, government affairs, and administrative services.

Jack Royal, Board Director

Jack Royal is the founding president and general manager of Blackfoot Crossing Historical Park, an institution for cultural education and historical preservation that has also become a tourism destination over its eleven years. Mr. Royal also operates a successful cow/calf, farming, and ranching operation supported by over 20 years in the agriculture industry. He is currently the chairperson of the Indian Business Corporation.
