Alberta Energy Regulator signs Memorandum of Understanding with Mexico

For immediate release

Calgary, Alberta (Jun 23, 2014)…

AER to share regulatory expertise with Mexican energy regulator

The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Mexico’s energy regulator, the Comisión Nacional de Hidrocarburos (CNH). The MOU formalizes an agreement to work collaboratively on regulatory best practices in the development of hydrocarbon resources.

In signing the MOU, AER CEO, Jim Ellis said: “The AER is pleased to exchange regulatory expertise with Mexico’s Comisión Nacional de Hidrocarburos as both agencies further develop their oil and gas resources in a safe, sustainable, and environmentally-responsible manner. The energy industry is global in nature and it is imperative for regulators to share best practices, lessons learned and technical information.”

Juan Carlos Zepeda Molina, President of CNH, welcomed the Mexican-Albertan collaboration. “As Mexico’s energy system opens up and attracts foreign and private investment it is imperative that we share experiences and expertise with other regulators like the AER. We look forward to working with the AER for many years to come.”

The AER and the CNH will work together in order to develop best practice regulations and monitoring methods, particularly in the areas of shale gas development, water management, enhanced oil recovery and venting and flaring.

The AER ensures the safe, efficient, orderly, and environmentally responsible development of hydrocarbon resources over their entire life cycle. This includes allocating and conserving water resources, managing public lands, and protecting the environment while providing economic benefits for all Albertans.
