The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) continues to take action to address emissions and odours in the Peace River area. On April 15, 2014 the AER accepted all recommendations - within our jurisdiction - made by the independent panel of hearing commissioners. The proceeding was conducted to examine odours and emissions from heavy oil operations in the Peace River area.
On February 23, 2017, the AER released new requirements for heavy oil and bitumen operators in the Peace River area to control emissions of gas that contribute to offensive odours. The requirements are set out in Directive 084: Requirements for Hydrocarbon Emission Controls and Gas Conservation in the Peace River area.
Directive 060: Upstream Petroleum Industry Flaring, Incinerating, and Venting remains in effect. This updated directive helps AER inspectors to identify noncompliances and issue enforcement actions for offensive off-lease hydrocarbon odours.
The AER has launched the Peace River Performance Dashboard to show progress in reducing flaring, venting, and incinerating and increasing gas conservation in the Peace River area.
We regularly report back to the community and area operators. For more information on actions taken in the Peace River area, visit the Reports & Updates webpage.
