Purpose of this Directive

This directive updates the requirements for managing reductions in benzene emissions from glycol dehydrators and for reporting these emissions. Licensees, however, are still required to meet Directive 060: Upstream Petroleum Industry Flaring, Incinerating, and Venting requirements for cumulative emissions from all sources at a facility or lease site.

This directive ensures continued reductions in benzene emissions to reduce potential impacts on the public and the environment. Modelling results show that to consistently meet the Alberta Ambient Air Quality Objectives for the benzene one-hour average, the upstream oil and gas industry must reduce current emission targets.
