The AER is governed by legislation—the Responsible Energy Development Act (REDA)—that regulates Alberta’s energy resources. The AER is, therefore, responsible for the administration of numerous statutes designed to protect and serve the best interests of Albertans.

Directives

Directives and interim directives are documents that set out new or amended AER requirements or processes for implementation. Licensees, permittees, and other approval holders under the jurisdiction of the AER are required to obey all directives.

The AER’s manuals consolidate existing requirements for easy reference and ensure consistency in pursuing regulatory compliance.

Bulletins

Bulletins inform the energy industry and the public of an AER activity, such as a consultation, new regulatory requirement, new program, or changes to the electronic submission of data. Bulletins might announce AER requirements, but they do not set them out.
