
Sean Sexton
Executive Vice President, Law Branch, and AER General Counsel
In May 2022, Sean Sexton became the executive vice president of the Law Branch and general counsel of the AER. He was previously the vice president of the Law Branch, starting in 2018. He has extensive knowledge of the AER’s legal and regulatory environment.
Mr. Sexton is counsel to the chair and board of directors on all matters, including corporate governance, enterprise risk management, the conduct of board meetings, and annual financial statement review and disclosure. Mr. Sexton is the AER’s liaison with the Alberta Public Agency Secretariat, as well as the chair of the AER’s Ethics Committee. In addition, he is responsible for overseeing the drafting of legislation, regulations, directives, and other regulatory documents that the AER administers.
Mr. Sexton has been in-house counsel for energy regulators for more than 12 years, joining the AER’s predecessor, the Energy Resources Conservation Board, in 2010. Prior to this, Mr. Sexton practised at a law firm then joined the Alberta Municipal Government Board, where he acted as counsel to the Board for tax assessment appeals on oil and gas wells, pipelines, and facilities.
Mr. Sexton holds a bachelor of science from the University of Calgary and a bachelor of laws from the University of Alberta. He was admitted to the Alberta Bar in 2005. He lives in Chestermere with his wife, two sons, and daughter.
