ST 57-2013: Field Surveillance and Operations Branch- Field Operations Provincial Summary 2012 reports on the upstream oil and gas industry’s regulatory performance. It summarizes annual field inspection data. The ERCB’s priority is to uphold public safety and environmental stewardship through effective regulation and front line inspections conducted through nine Alberta field centres.
This report provides the 2012 ERCB field operations inspection data received by December 31, 2012.
Highlights from 2012 include the following:
- The ERCB conducted 12 482 field inspections, of which 447 were high risk noncompliant.
- A total of 9 286 wells were drilled—an decrease from 10 711 wells drilled in 2011—and 383 drilling operations inspections were conducted.
- There were 2 well blowouts during drilling in 2012, a decrease from 3 in 2011.
- The pipeline failure rate for 2012 remained the same as reported in 2011 at 1.5 failures per 1000 kilometres (km)
