The program relies on education, prevention, and enforcement activities to ensure compliance with its energy and environmental statutes.

Public Safety and Environmental Protection

Public safety and environmental protection are at the backbone of the AER’s energy-development requirements. The AER is committed to developing and enforcing safe and efficient practices during the entire life cycle of energy development. This includes the exploration, production, transportation, and closure of oil and gas resources.

Education

AER staff continually work with energy operators to ensure the rules are followed. Through formal industry education sessions, discussing the results of a field inspection, or working with an applicant to ensure their application meets our standards, AER staff are educating operators every day.

Inspections, Audits, & Investigations

In order to verify that rules are followed, the AER monitors energy operators through surveillance, inspections, audits, and response to complaints. The AER also conducts investigations to systematically collect information and evidence to determine the facts relevant to a noncompliance of a rule.

Enforcement is a key part of ensuring compliance. Companies that are allowed to develop Alberta’s oil and gas resources must follow all rules, regulations, and requirements. If they don’t, they face strong consequences.
