Announcement – May 9, 2026

Seismic Event

The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) received a report from Shell Canada (Shell) of seismic events on May 9, 2026, approximately 73 kilometres northeast of Edmonton. The events are estimated to be approximately 4.2 magnitude.
Shell is not currently operating in the area. There are no reports of damage or injury at this time. The AER requires companies to implement mitigation protocols when seismic events occur.

The Alberta Geological Survey (AGS), a branch of the AER, is reviewing the reported information to determine the nature and potential cause of the event.

Scientists at the AGS use a network of more than 70 seismic monitoring stations, along with additional data sources, to measure and analyze seismic activity across Alberta. This information is used to determine earthquake locations, magnitudes, and whether events are natural or potentially induced.

Further updates will be provided if additional information becomes available.
