Release of Manual 032: How to Submit Seismic Waveform Data

Release Date

Today, we released Manual 032: How to Submit Seismic Waveform Data. The manual provides information on how to submit real-time waveform data to the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) and EarthScope.

Data obtained through licensee and approval holder submissions, combined with data from our Regional Alberta Observatory for Earthquake Studies Network and other seismic monitoring networks in and around Alberta, will help provide us with a better understanding of baseline seismicity across the province and distinguish naturally occurring seismic events from induced seismicity.

The submission of seismic data is established by several AER orders and directives, including Subsurface Order No. 2A (near Fox Creek), Subsurface Order No. 6 (near the Brazeau Dam), Subsurface Order No. 7 (near Red Deer), Directive 065, Resource Applications for Oil and Gas Reservoirs, and any similar orders and approvals that mandate real-time seismic data submission.

Manual 032 sets out the expectations for licensees and approval holders, including their vendors providing seismic data collection and monitoring station maintenance, for submitting seismic waveform data. In addition, the manual

  • defines the required capabilities of the established network,
  • provides instructions on establishing a reliable real-time data stream connection with the AER and EarthScope and for a non-real-time data stream connection (as necessary),
  • an explanation of how the AER uses the data, and how EarthScope stores the data, and
  • contact information and links to additional resources.

Manual 032 is available on the manuals landing page.
