Upcoming Information Sessions on Proposed Revisions to Directive 011: Estimated Liability

Release Date

The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is proposing revisions to Directive 011: Estimated Liability to improve the liability estimates for individual licences and licensees, as well as the oil and gas industry as a whole. Specifically, new and updated closure costs will be introduced for pipeline abandonment, single-well battery abandonment, certain multiwell battery abandonment, and well remediation and reclamation.

Information Sessions

In advance of the public comment period of the draft directive, which will be announced soon and will be the mechanism to provide feedback about the revisions, we invite licensees and other stakeholders to attend three virtual information sessions to learn more.

Each information session will provide an overview of the proposed changes and rationale for the changes and offer an opportunity for attendees to ask questions for improved understanding.

Stakeholders are invited to attend any of the following virtual sessions:

As these requirements may be new to some pipeline-only licensees, we invite them to contact us at liabilitymanagement@aer.ca for more information about the directive revisions and the broader Liability Management Framework.

  • Single-Well and Multiwell Batteries Estimated Liability
  • Well Remediation and Reclamation Estimated Liability

Each session will include a 30-minute presentation on the proposed updates followed by a question-and-answer period.
