The new edition of Directive 058, published March 5, 2026, comes into effect on June 4, 2026, to provide industry sufficient time to update their waste management tracking systems with the new waste tracking codes. The February 2025 edition of Directive 058 remains in effect until June 4, 2026. Applicants should contact the AER if an application is submitted before June 4, 2026, but is expected to be reviewed after this date.

Purpose of this Directive
This directive sets out the requirements for the handling, treatment, reuse, and disposal of oilfield waste produced by the upstream petroleum and geothermal resource development industries. This includes waste management responsibilities, activities, methods, and documentation.
