The Government of Alberta has set an ambitious goal to grow oil and gas production in the province and diversify into emerging critical mineral resources. Achieving this goal requires a modern, predictable, and responsive regulatory approach and strategy.
The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is one of a few organizations worldwide responsible for regulating the full development life cycle from exploration through to closure. This integrated, life-cycle-based mandate uniquely positions us to support Alberta’s evolving energy and mineral resource development responsibly, competitively, and sustainably.
Our strategy outlines the key areas we will focus on through 2030. It connects our vision and strategic priorities to our daily mandate work.
Our Mandate
Our mandate is to provide for the efficient, safe, orderly, and environmentally responsible development of energy and mineral resources in Alberta through our regulatory activities.
Our Vision
Empowering Alberta’s prosperity by positioning the regulator to implement its legislated mandate and Government of Alberta policy through a modern regulatory framework that accelerates sustained economic growth and drives efficient and responsible development of Alberta’s energy and mineral resources.
Strategic Priorities
We have established three priorities to guide our work through 2030. Through these priorities, we will maintain public trust, uphold industry accountability, and enable the responsible growth of production, while enhancing liability management throughout the development life cycle.
Enable Growth in Production
Create the right conditions for investment and responsible growth across all AER-regulated sectors by streamlining regulatory processes, improving predictability, leveraging innovation, and better aligning our risk appetite with regulatory outcomes.
Enhance Liability Management
Ensure end-of-life obligations are considered and managed by reducing risks associated with inactive, contaminated, and orphaned sites; enhancing oversight; and accelerating regulatory action where needed to protect the public interest.
Increase Organizational Effectiveness
Increase organizational effectiveness through a modern, risk-informed regulatory approach that delivers responsive and predictable outcomes by developing and sustaining a knowledgeable workforce, fostering a high-performing culture, providing the right tools and technologies, and making deliberate and sustainable funding decisions.
