Today, we published a new edition of Directive 058: Oilfield Waste Management Requirements for the Upstream Petroleum Industry. We also published Manual 034: Oilfield Waste Management, which is a new manual. In addition, we released a new edition of the Alberta Oilfield Waste Form (with revised instructions on the reverse to align the form with Directive 058) and three new application schedules:
- Schedule 2: New Oilfield Waste Management Facilities or Oilfield Waste Management Components
- Schedule 3: Amendments and Notifications for Oilfield Waste Management Facilities and Oilfield Waste Management Components
- Schedule 4: One-Time and Pilot Project Applications
Furthermore, we revised Directive 047: Waste Reporting Requirements for Oilfield Waste Management Facilities with new oilfield waste codes and reporting codes.
The revised directives, new manual, form, and schedules will take effect on June 4, 2026, allowing oilfield waste generators and receivers time to adjust their waste tracking systems. Until the new editions of the directives take effect, the existing editions remain in effect. For May 2026 production, and continuing thereafter, waste dispositions are to be recorded in Petrinex using the new waste codes that take effect June 4, 2026.
Directive 030: Digital Data Submission of the Annual Oilfield Waste Disposition Report will be rescinded once the new edition of Directive 058 takes effect. The submission format and process for waste reporting in Directive 030 is now in Manual 034. The requirements to report waste remain in Directive 058.
The revised editions of Directive 058 and Directive 047 are available on their respective landing pages (Directive 058, Directive 047). Manual 034 is available on the manuals webpage. The form and schedules are available on the directive forms webpage.
Draft versions of Directive 058, Manual 034, and the schedules were released for public comment on October 3, 2025, and feedback was accepted until November 2, 2025 (see Bulletin 2025-30). We will release the What We Heard document, which summarizes the feedback we received and our response, at a future date. The What We Heard document will be available on the Directive 058 landing page.
