The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is actively responding to an incident at the Syncrude Mildred Lake site that has resulted in odour complaints from the surrounding communities. Suncor Energy as the operator of the Syncrude site has identified the source of the odours and has been taking steps to mitigate any impact. While odours are still being detected in surrounding communities and on the highway near the site, air quality readings at off-site monitoring stations have not exceeded thresholds for human health.
On September 8, the AER began receiving odour complaints from surrounding communities. The AER deployed a field inspector to site to assess odours and mitigation measures taken by the operator. Air quality monitoring is in place in the surrounding communities, and the AER continues to receive updates from and oversee the operator’s response to ensure timely mitigation. Further information will be provided as necessary.
Alberta Occupational Health & Safety has been on-site and is monitoring the situation.
