Policy Direction Concerning Unpaid Municipal Taxes
On March 20, 2023, we received Ministerial Order 043/2023, stating:
The Minister of Energy is authorized by section 67 of the Responsible Energy Development Act, S.A 2012, c. R-17.3 (“REDA”) to give directions to the Alberta Energy Regulator (“the AER”) for the purpose of:
- providing priorities and guidelines for the AER to follow in carrying out its power, duties, and functions; and
- ensuring the work of the AER is consistent with the program, policies, and work of the Government of Alberta concerning energy resource development, public land management, environmental management, and water management.
The minister has directed us to take the actions noted in the ministerial order on or before April 30, 2023.
We are reviewing this direction and will develop and implement a process by April 30, 2023, that ensures applicants for a well licence or well licence transfer do not have unpaid municipal taxes above a yet-to-be-established threshold. We will provide more information in the coming weeks.
