Directive 051: Injection and Disposal Wells – Well Classifications, Completions, Logging, and Testing Requirements
Effective Date: April 28, 2023
Replaces the previous edition released on March 1, 1994.
Released with Bulletin 2023-23.
Purpose of this Directive
This directive sets out requirements for wellbore design, wellbore integrity logging, operational monitoring, and reporting requirements of injection wells for the purposes of enhanced recovery, hydrocarbon storage, and disposal.
A system of classifying injection and disposal wells has been developed on the basis of injected or disposed fluid such that design, operating, and monitoring requirements are consistent with the type of the fluids injected.
Directive 051 has been rebranded and placed in the AER’s current format for directives. This directive now also applies to geothermal resource development. For more information, see section 1.3, “What’s New in This Edition."
