AER brings charges against Nexen for 2015 pipeline release

Alberta - July 05, 2017

Charges have been laid against Nexen for one of Alberta’s largest pipeline spills, which released 5000 cubic metres of crude oil and produced water at its Long Lake site near Fort McMurray in July 2015.

The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) announced the charges on July 6, 2017; Nexen will appear in provincial court on August 16, 2017.

The AER has taken numerous actions to ensure Nexen meets all AER requirements, including regular inspections and suspending a number of pipelines at the site to make sure they pose no risk to the public or the environment. The pipeline responsible for the spill remains suspended until the AER determines that it can be operated safely.
