Fort Hills Sturgeon Upgrader

On April 7, 2021, the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) received Suncor Energy Inc.'s (Suncor) confirmation that Suncor will not proceed with the Sturgeon Upgrader project and thereby withdraws the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act application 001-00231303 and Water Act applications 001-00236443, 001-00248027, 001-00249742 and 001-00263827. The AER hereby cancels the applications for the Fort Hills Sturgeon Upgrader.

This notice is intended to publicly acknowledge all previous statement of concern filers and any affected parties by the proposed project that the Fort Hills Sturgeon Upgrader applications are cancelled.

Description of the Applications
Fort Hills Energy Corporation originally applied to the AER (previously Alberta Energy and Utilities Board and Alberta Environment) for approval to construct and operate the Fort Hills Sturgeon Upgrader and associated infrastructure with a capacity to process 54,000 cubic metres per day of bitumen. The upgrader was proposed in Township 56, Ranges 21&22, W4M, Sturgeon County, approximately 40 kilometres northeast of the city of Edmonton.

Suncor, on behalf of the Fort Hills Energy Corporation, is requesting to withdraw the applications.
