AER Response To Communities
The AER is grateful to the many First Nations, Métis Associations, and Indigenous communities who have welcomed our senior leaders, CEO Laurie Pushor and COO Martin Foy, to their traditional territories and Treaty lands in and around the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo over the past several days.
We appreciate the frank and constructive discussions we have shared regarding the circumstances that led to the AER filing an Environmental Protection Order (EPO) against Imperial Oil on February 6, 2023.
We acknowledge the heartfelt concern of many residents in these communities.
Our primary focus is always on public safety and protecting the environment including wildlife and sources of drinking water.
As regulator, we will continue to provide compliance monitoring and oversight of all activities pertaining to the terms of the EPO.
The AER continues to investigate the two events defined in the EPO and will share findings as we can while we ensure the integrity of the investigations.
We remain committed to transparency around the work underway at the AER.
